UBUNTU by ABOVE

"While in Cape Town, South Africa last year I initiated an art project in the township of Lavender Hill, involving the community and especially the children of the area in the process. The word UBUNTU is a southern African ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other.
Having painted in this impoverished township weeks prior, I quickly noticed how interested the children were with making art. Their township had an overwhelming number is discarded tires littered all over their property. A few weeks later, I conceptualized a fun project involving the communities children and re-appropriating the hundreds of tires, to make a colorful totem pole. Each child chose a color to paint their tire. Once dried we joined all the tires together, and stacked the colorful spectrum into one unified totem pole.

South Africa is an extremely diverse country and each color of the tires represented different races. As is in life, when we all work together and help each other out we are able to grow and become larger than life! The enthusiasm and smiles of the children touched me deeply! I was honored to introduce them to painting, as many of them have never held a brush or painted before." - ABOVE
