Paste Magazine, a privately owned national music magazine, has launched
Obamicon.Me.
Visitors to Paste’s site can create their own version of
artist Shepard Fairey’s cult phenomenon poster from the 2008 Presidential election.
Fairey’s poster, titled “Hope”, gained widespread use during Barack Obama’s campaign for the Presidency.
“
Shepard’s original Hope poster was so iconic, we thought people would have fun making their own version to make their own personal statements about politics, culture or whatever,” Said Josh Jackson, Editor-In-Chief of
Paste magazine. “The feedback from readers has been great. The best line I’ve heard about
Obamicon so far: ‘
Obamicon might change the world… or at least everyone’s profile pics.”
Most recently, the Obama Inaugural Committee announced they are using a similar
Shepard Fairey design for the official inauguration poster. Also, the National Portrait Gallery has decided to add
Fairey’s original Hope print to its collection.
Paste Magazine also sees this as a chance for readers to get involved with the energy around the inauguration without having to venture to Washington, D.C. “It’s a special moment in American history, no matter where you fall on the political spectrum – and I for one have been amazed at the creativity we’ve already seen in
Obamicon.Me’s first few days,” said Tim Regan-Porter, Paste president.
Since
Obamicon.Me’s soft launch on January 7, over 10,000 “Obamicons” have been created.
